Why Are My Teeth Yellow Even Though I Brush Frequently?

Brushing your teeth helps lessen the amount of discoloration on your teeth, but you need more help to keep a pearly white smile. Teeth discoloration can have more than one cause. It can be age-related, caused by foods in your diet, medications, or even genetic.

  • Teeth Discoloration as We Age: It is natural for your teeth to become slightly yellow as you age, since the enamel wears out and the dentin underneath starts to show through.
  • Extrinsic Stains: These are stains that affect the tooth surface and are caused by things like smoking, coffee and tea, cola drinks, and red wine. These types of staining are easier to bleach out of the tooth. 
  • Intrinsic Discoloration: These are stains under the surface of the teeth that can be caused by excessive use of fluoride or damage to the tooth due to accidents or certain medications.This type of discoloration doesn't usually respond as well to surface bleaching.

Does Whitening Damage Teeth?

When done correctly, whitening doesn’t damage your teeth. Under the supervision of Igal Leizerovich, DDS, teeth whitening is a controlled process. The frequency of use and concentration of the professional whitening gel are administered in a way that is entirely safe as long as you comply with treatment instructions.

Which Teeth Whitening Methods Do We Offer?

At Elite Dentistry, we offer in house bleaching or kits that you can use at home. Both are effective and easy to do. In house bleaching is quicker and done on one visit. Take home trays are a flexible method that lets you whiten at your own pace and makes it easy to touch up every few months to maintain your sparkling smile.

How Does Teeth Whitening Work?

woman holding teeth whitening trayTo start the whitening process, you need to visit our practice to go over which method fits you best. During the first visit, we will take impressions of your teeth to create your custom trays. If you are doing in house whitening we will apply the product and gum protective barrier. You will have the product on your teeth for approximately 15 or 20 minute sessions and then the teeth will be cleaned and product will be re applied 3 or 4 times. Fluoride can be applied after bleaching to help with any sensitivity.

The second appointment is essential to make sure your trays are well adjusted to fit your teeth perfectly. Along with your trays we will provide you with professional high-concentration whitening gel. Use your trays to distribute the whitening solution evenly across your entire smile to initially whiten, or to touch up after in house whitening.

You can wear your whitening trays for 30 - 60 min at a time. If sensitivity occurs, shorten the amount of time worn, or change from every day to every other day. You need to follow the instructions we provide on how to properly use your trays for safe and effective at-home whitening. We also recommend you keep your bi-annual appointments for cleanings and examinations to help keep your smile healthy and white.

How Long Does Whitening Last?

Whitening is not permanent, but can last several months to a year depending on the individual. To help the effects last longer you will need to be diligent with your brushing and flossing, rinse after eating or drinking anything that might stain your teeth, and keeping current with your dental cleanings. You can use the take home trays to do touch-ups when needed.

How Long Does It Take to Achieve Results?

Keep in mind that the whitening gel doesn’t change the color of your teeth. Instead, it removes stains to reveal your natural enamel color.
